To win in Dark Legions, you'll need to employ tactical attacks (like in chess), practice deception (hide your battle plan) and be inventive. Much of the strategy element deals with selecting the right army components and where to place them on the map during a particular scenario. Dark Legions features both a 3D and overhead view and special effects that affect gameplay like time of day (afterall, a vampire fights better at night, right?) and unique powers, abilities, restricted and hidden movements for each of 16 different types of beings (such as berserkers, conjurers, elementals, orcs, phantoms, seers, trolls and more). To enhance your army, you can also buy six magical rings that modify your troops and seven different traps to spring on the enemy. You are limited to an army of up to 100 at any given time using a credit system where the more powerful a character is, the more it costs, so you must take care not to exceed the limit when summoning recruits. The game is populated with creatures of dark fantasy and your job is to manipulate these beings to the best advantage and stomp your opponent senseless. Your main objective is simply to be king of the hill.
The Dark Legions sets players on an epic quest of good against evil, as they command their hero and amass their army towards the ultimate battle. And pressing the Esc button will immediately exit the game without any prompting. The lack of a save feature makes things even worse. Expect plenty of crashes during the game. While Strategy 3 is almost a flawless masterpiece (in freeware standards of course), the game is very buggy. There is a lack of music which I think could improve the game's atmosphere especially for an RTS like this. You can also see the progress of the buildings being worked on. The details in this game are also commendable. I found the graphics to be good, clean and easy on the eyes, but some will comment that they are a little too dull and shabby. The author has actually bothered to make this game 3D! It all depends on personal taste. While Strategy 3 won't score points for originality, the 'Warcrafish' gameplay already makes up for it. Even the loading screen looks like the one in Warcraft2.
Especially where Warcraft 3 is concerned, most of its concepts have been used here. To do so, you need to employ a great deal of strategy while protecting your own orb carrier from your opponent. The goal of the game is simple: find the carrier of the orb and kill him.

It is possible that your PC just does not have enough performance. But let's talk about the game itself: Dark Legions is a mix of combat and clever strategy dressed in gorgeous VGA graphics. Fans of these games will find the controls of Strategy 3 to be very familiar. If The Dark Legions often crashes to the desktop, try to reduce quality of the graphics. Gameplay is very similar to Warcraft 3 and AoE. But what the heck, ain't Warcraft 3 and Age of Empires the best of their kind? Expect Strategy 3 to be a masterpiece, a champion in the freeware scene. Strategy 3: The Dark Legions is a real-time strategy game that plays just like Warcraft3 and Age of Empires, maybe a little too similar.
